It’s always nifty, of course, to run across somebody who truly “gets” what is happening in the land of microbusiness — especially since it seems to happen so rarely. But what’s better about Dr. Lahm is that he is an academic. And you know what that means, right?

Report on a dull weekend at the work desk.

The inevitable did happen: I tilted my chair, put my feet up on my PC underneath the desk and ended up snoozing. I’d answer some calls, do a cursory check of the email queue, then go back to napping again. At around 11am I ran out into the rain to grab a Subway from across the street. Getting wet reinvigorated me again.

The FOSE 2008 conference has everything a government IT worker wants, even office furniture.

Nevertheless, there are a lot of big exhibitors there, and of course it’s dominated by hardware vendors. Lenovo, Dell, HP, IBM, Fujitsu, Toshiba… all present and accounted for. There were also tons of vendors with everything from server racks to air and power handlers to cable ties to IT office furniture. Google did have a prime-position booth, though, showing off their search engines and other online services, and there were some jobhunting organizations there too, like Dice.com.

Fabrice Grinda provides some good methods to valuate an early-stage company.

The Business Software Alliance fights software piracy, but is that a reasonable effort?

One of those is the Business Software Alliance, the group that trumpets how stolen software is costing the industry twenty zillion dollars a year, and how we'd all be gainfully employed and how there'd be no national debt and, probably, world peace, if we'd all just pay for the software we use.

A new team leader writes some thoughts on management.

Good processes make a good team. At MobME, I’m implementing a few things I learnt while working at Uzanto: Daily End-Of-Day reports for the team, SCRUM in the morning, and constant communication via a small office and approachable managers. The work atmosphere is relaxed, and people are given time to learn. There’s no fixed time for lunch or a quick smoke. There’s an attendance register and people are held accountable for their work and leave.

A good tip on saving space in your small home office.

If you have been following my blog, you would know that I am in the process of setting up a small office home office. I am trying my best to find furniture that will not take up too much space, like computer carts, for instance. Since I have quite a few computer systems at home, I have set up LAN networking and now I need to buy one of those LAN Racks too. I don’t know, do you think LAN Racks are necessary for my kind of set up?

Company Fires Man For Helping Wounded Woman

A human resources blunder?

Bruley was a leasing agent for the Oaks at Mill Creek, an apartment complex owned by Village Green Companies. He also lived in the complex. The excuse used by the company was that Bruley had violated employee rules which forbids “weapons in the workplace”. Apparently the company wanted to pretend that Bruley’s private apartment and that of his neighbor are part of his “workplace” -- something tenants might find a bit disturbing.

Some tips for those of us with messy desks and other clutter.
